Synopsis: Aquatic invasive species negatively influence natural resources, fisheries, recreational opportunities, cultural activities, and impair all forms of water infrastructure for storage and delivery in drinking water, power, industrial, and agricultural production systems. This presentation will focus on learning how to properly identify aquatic plants and animals differentiating between native and invasive species; reporting and verification of field identification processes; the ecology and known distributions of high priority invasive species; integrated pest management strategies; current pathway prevention programs and gaps; and finally federal legislation that may benefit Colorado will be described.

Participants will:

  • Become better equipped to identify submerged and floating aquatic vegetation.
  • Become better equipped to identify invasive aquatic animals.
  • Know which waters in Colorado are positive for listed aquatic invasive species and which species are on the horizon to look out for.
  • Have a better understanding of pathway prevention management strategies for aquatic invasive species.
  • Learn when and how to report, collect, and submit aquatic invasives species for verification.
  • Hear about current federal legislation to address aquatic invasive species that may benefit Colorado.
About the Speaker:
Elizabeth Brown has over twenty years of experience in the field of invasive species and has worked in Colorado since 2002. Most of that time was with the Department of Natural Resources as the Stewardship Coordinator and the Invasive Species Coordinator within Colorado Parks and Wildlife. She also served in the Department of Agriculture’s Noxious Weed Program as the Early Detection and Rapid Response Specialist. Elizabeth recently left the state and started her own business: Elizabeth Brown Environmental. She is currently working as the Program Manager of Legislative Affairs, Professional Development, and the Weed Free Forage, Gravel and Mulch Program for the North American Invasive Species Management Association. Elizabeth also serves as an Advisor to the CWMA Board of Directors and to the Western Regional Panel on Aquatic Nuisance Species’ Executive Committee.
