Synopsis:
Aquatic invasive species negatively influence natural resources, fisheries, recreational opportunities, cultural activities, and impair all forms of water infrastructure for storage and delivery in drinking water, power, industrial, and agricultural production systems. This presentation will focus on learning how to properly identify aquatic plants and animals differentiating between native and invasive species; reporting and verification of field identification processes; the ecology and known distributions of high priority invasive species; integrated pest management strategies; and current pathway prevention programs and gaps.
Learning objectives:
· Become better equipped to identify submerged and floating aquatic vegetation.
· Become better equipped to identify invasive aquatic animals.
· Know which waters in Colorado are positive for listed aquatic invasive species and which species are on the horizon to look out for.
· Have a better understanding of pathway prevention management strategies for aquatic invasive species.
· Learn when and how to report, collect, and submit aquatic invasive species for verification.
Speaker Bio:
Robert Walters is the CPW's Invasive Species Program Manager. He oversees the statewide efforts to detect, prevent, and control aquatic invasive species. He has over 10 year’s experience managing aquatic noxious weeds, aquatic nuisance animals, Watercraft inspection and decontamination, terrestrial noxious weeds, exotic forest insects.
